Sold as an anti-aging peptide. The research is mostly animal and lab work from one Russian group, and no proper trial of epitalon itself has been done in people.

Sold for

Epitalon is sold as a telomerase-activating longevity peptide that resets the pineal gland and extends lifespan.

Studies say

Animal and cell studies from a single research school plus one weak human study of a different preparation put this at C.

Why grade C. The anti-aging claim rests on rodent and fruit-fly lifespan studies, monkey hormone-rhythm studies and cell-culture telomerase work, nearly all from the St Petersburg group that designed the peptide. 1235 The only human mortality data concern Epithalamin, a crude pineal extract, in a 266-person study without a described randomization or blinding, so human evidence for epitalon itself is essentially absent. 7

FDA. Not approved by the FDA for any use and sold as a research chemical. In July 2026 the FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee voted, over the objection of FDA staff, to recommend adding epitalon to the list of substances pharmacies may compound for insomnia; that recommendation is advisory and the FDA had not acted on it as of October 2026. 410

What this means for you

What people take it for
Slowing aging, and sleep.
Can a US doctor prescribe it?
No. It is not approved and is sold as a research chemical.
Properly tested in people?
Not properly: animal or lab studies, or small uncontrolled human reports. The one 266-person study tested a different extract and had unclear methods.

What it is

Epitalon (also spelled epithalon) is a lab-made peptide with four amino acids: Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly. Vladimir Khavinson's group designed it in the 1990s. They worked at the St Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. They based it on the amino acids in Epithalamin, an extract of cattle pineal glands. The same group had used that extract in Russian clinics since the Soviet era. 1

Epitalon is not the same thing as Epithalamin. That is a mix of peptides from animal tissue, and no one knows exactly what is in it. Epitalon is a single known molecule. The group proposed it as the active part. Most of the human data online are about Epithalamin, not epitalon. 167

How it works

The proposed mechanism has two strands. One is that epitalon restores pineal melatonin output and the daily rhythm of cortisol. The Khavinson group reported this in aged rhesus monkeys. The other is that it switches on telomerase. This enzyme rebuilds the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes. This was first reported in cultured human cells in 2003. In 2025 an independent lab reproduced it in normal human cells and breast cancer cell lines. 125

The telomerase finding cuts both ways. Cancer cells use telomerase and the alternative lengthening pathway to live on. The 2025 study found that epitalon turned on this second pathway in cancer cells only. Helping telomeres last in a person with an undetected tumor is a theoretical risk. The 2026 FDA panel raised it as a concern. 510

What human research shows

In 2003 the Khavinson group reported on 266 elderly people. They got Epithalamin and a thymus extract over several years. Deaths were lower by roughly half to two-thirds than in controls. The paper is indexed as a randomized trial. But it does not describe randomization, allocation concealment or blinding. It does not describe the comparison groups. No independent group has replicated it. It studied the extract, not epitalon. 7

For epitalon itself, the group's reviews mention better sight in patients with retinitis pigmentosa. They also mention normal melatonin rhythms. But these are brief summary lines. They are not controlled trials with published methods. 1

In 2026 the FDA's advisory committee looked at epitalon for insomnia. The agency had put it in Category 1 of nominated bulk substances. FDA staff advised against adding it. They said the clinical data were inadequate. Even so, the committee voted 7 to 4 with one abstention in favor. As of October 2026, the FDA had not accepted or rejected the recommendation. 46910

Safety

Russian papers report no side effects. But they have no systematic safety checks. The main worry is cancer. A compound that boosts telomerase and the alternative telomere-lengthening pathway could in principle help a new cancer live. No one has tested this in people. Epitalon sold online is unregulated. No one checks its dose, purity or sterility. It is not a federally controlled substance. 5810

Questions for your clinician

  • Is there any controlled human trial of epitalon itself for the use I have in mind?
  • Does a telomerase effect matter given my cancer risk?
  • How is the product I'm considering tested for purity?

Questions people ask

Is epitalon FDA-approved?

No. It is not approved as a drug anywhere. In July 2026 an FDA advisory panel recommended letting pharmacies compound it for insomnia. This went against the advice of FDA staff. The agency has not acted on it, and the vote does not make it legal to prescribe. 410

Is there proof that epitalon switches on telomerase in people?

It does in human cells in a dish, and an independent lab confirmed this in 2025. No one has tested whether injected epitalon does so in a living person. No one knows if that would be good or bad. 5

How is epitalon related to Epithalamin?

No. Epithalamin is a crude extract of cattle pineal glands. Epitalon is a single lab-made tetrapeptide, built to mimic it. People often quote a human study of deaths for epitalon. That study used Epithalamin. 167

What can the human longevity studies on epitalon really tell us?

One study of 266 people reported fewer deaths. They took Epithalamin and a thymus extract. The paper did not describe randomization, blinding or group makeup. No one else has replicated it. There is no human lifespan data for epitalon. 7

Can you buy epitalon legally in the US?

It is not a federally controlled substance, so having it is not a crime. But it is not an approved drug, and selling it for human use breaks the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. Vendors sell it labeled for research. 89
