Is Calcitonin-salmon safe?
21-trial meta-analysis found more cancers
The injection often causes nausea, flushing of the face or hands and reactions at the injection site. The nasal spray most often causes nose irritation, dryness or nosebleeds. Calcitonin-salmon is a foreign protein. Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported. The label says to consider a skin test in people who may be sensitive. Hypocalcemia can occur. 561
The main long-term unknown is the cancer signal described above. The trials in the meta-analysis were not built to detect cancer. No single tumor type led. So the finding is unexplained, and no one has disproven it. 54
Pooled data from 21 randomized trials showed cancers in 4.1% of patients on calcitonin-salmon and 2.9% on placebo. No single cancer type explains the gap. The trials were not built to study it. So the signal is unresolved. 5
