Is Glutathione safe?

Oral and inhaled tolerated; 2026 endotoxin illnesses from compounded IV

BSome human evidenceNot approvedas of 2026-10-28

Oral glutathione was well tolerated in the six-month trial. In cystic fibrosis, inhaled glutathione caused about as many side effects as placebo. The concerns lie with the intravenous route. It is compounded, not made under drug approval. The skin trial authors note that the long-term safety of glutathione for lightening has not been established. 452

In August 2026 the FDA warned compounders after at least 30 people fell ill following intravenous glutathione. The reactions matched endotoxin exposure. Endotoxin is a bacterial residue that causes fever and shock when injected. The pharmacies involved had all used dietary supplement grade glutathione from one supplier lot. The FDA said supplement grade powder is not made to the standard needed for injection. A Texas compounding pharmacy recalled glutathione lots for elevated endotoxin in October 2026. 67
