Marrow, kidney and leukemia risks documented
Common side effects in NETTER-1 were nausea, vomiting, fatigue and low blood counts. The amino acid infusion caused some of the nausea. A minority of patients had grade 3 or 4 drops in white cells, platelets or lymphocytes. The radiation also reaches bone marrow and kidneys. So the label warns of three problems. One is bone marrow suppression. Another is secondary leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome. About 2 percent of patients had it in long-term follow-up. The third is kidney toxicity. 12
The label also lists hormonal crisis from sudden hormone release by the tumor. It lists infertility and harm to a fetus. Patients give off radiation for days after treatment. They get instructions on limiting close contact. Researchers are still collecting kidney and marrow outcomes beyond about five years. 2
