Is Pemvidutide safe?
Small phase 2 samples; no long-term data
Side effects in both trials were mostly in the gut, nausea and vomiting above all. This is true of every GLP-1-based drug. The sponsor reported that fixed dosing without step-up was tolerated. Few people stopped the drug for side effects. The glucagon part raises theoretical worries about blood sugar and heart rate. The published trials showed no sign of high blood sugar. But the samples are small, and they did not include people with poorly controlled diabetes. 23
Long-term safety is unknown. The longest controlled use published is 24 weeks in 212 patients. That cannot detect uncommon harms. No one has reported what happens to weight and liver fat when the drug is stopped. 2
