Is Ecallantide safe?
Anaphylaxis rate from 255 treated patients
Anaphylaxis is the main risk. Across clinical trials, about 4% of treated patients (10 of 255) had an anaphylactic reaction. It usually came within an hour of the injection. For this reason, the label carries a boxed warning. A healthcare professional who can treat anaphylaxis must give the drug. Unlike icatibant, ecallantide cannot be self-injected at home. Patients may also develop antibodies to the drug with repeated use. 2
Common adverse events in trials were headache, nausea, diarrhea, fever, injection-site reactions and upper respiratory infection. 12
