Epitalon

Does Epitalon work?

Not properly: animal or lab studies, or small uncontrolled human reports. The one 266-person study tested a different extract and had unclear methods.

The anti-aging claim rests on rodent and fruit-fly lifespan studies, monkey hormone-rhythm studies and cell-culture telomerase work, nearly all from the St Petersburg group that designed the peptide. 1235 The only human mortality data concern Epithalamin, a crude pineal extract, in a 266-person study without a described randomization or blinding, so human evidence for epitalon itself is essentially absent. 7

In 2003 the Khavinson group reported on 266 elderly people. They got Epithalamin and a thymus extract over several years. Deaths in the Epithalamin group were 1.6 to 1.8 times lower than in controls. The paper is indexed as a randomized trial. But it does not describe randomization, allocation concealment or blinding. It does not describe the comparison groups. No independent group has replicated it. It studied the extract, not epitalon. 7

For epitalon itself, the group's reviews mention better sight in patients with retinitis pigmentosa. They also mention normal melatonin rhythms. But these are brief summary lines. They are not controlled trials with published methods. 1

Evidence checklist

  • Randomised controlled trial No RCT of epitalon in people
  • Human study over 100 people 266-person study, but of a different extract
  • More than one research group Nearly all work from one St Petersburg group
  • Clinical outcomes, not surrogate markers Mortality data are for Epithalamin, unreplicated
  • Human safety data beyond case reports No systematic safety monitoring
